ASIS International Montgomery Chapter College Tour - Auburn University Montgomery
We completed our second stop on the College Tour 2012. Our distinguished speaker panel included Joseph Borg, Director of the Alabama Securities Commission; Sandra Johnson, Criminal Intelligence Analyst and Terrorism Branch Team Leader for the Alabama Fusion Center; Michale Waters, Protective Security Advisor for the United States Department of Homeland Security; and Eddie Sorrells, CPP, Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel for DSI Security Services, Inc.
Topics discussed by the panel included how their duties changed after 9/11. Sandra Johnson and Michael Waters' positions were born out of the tragedy that hit this nation in 2001. Private security companies, such as DSI Security Services, had to adjust to the changing needs of clients for more information and training. The Alabama Securities Commission was involved in how companies store duplicate or back-up financial records due to the losses from the financial and brokerage companies that worked out of the towers the day they fell.
Also discussed by the panel is how there is better cooperation between the private and public sectors and initiatives being explore to enhance that relationship. The Alabama Fusion Center is a hub of sorts for any kind of information that could be used to prevent and monitor any criminal or terrorist activity not just in Alabama but any law enforcement agency and partner private sector organization. Private security plays a vital role in this intelligence gathering because they are usually the first ones to notice unusual activity around the areas they patrol or monitor.
The Alabama Securities Commission and Alabama Fusion Center both have internship programs that seek out those students who possess the skills and desire to excel in the missions of these organizations.
The Auburn University Montgomery faculty members who attended the event feel that it was worth while for the students and are interested in future associations with the Montgomery Chapter of ASIS International. Special recognition goes out to Director Ricky Adams of the Auburn University Montgomery Department of Public Safety.
